The Oaks Historic District

Developed ca.1900, the Oaks District is characterized by wide streets lined with oaks, which were
first planted in 1905. The district is the site of “Pinehurst,” a 1928 Neo-Classical style home built on
the same site Hattiesburg founder William H. Hardy chose in 1895 for his estate. The primary
architectural style of the district is Craftsman Bungalow; however, examples of Tudor, Mission,
Renaissance, Victorian, Colonial Revival and Neo-Classical are also found.  The Oaks Historic
District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in April of 1993.

The Oaks community continues to thrive and improve as a diverse residential neighborhood of
young families, retirees and single professionals.  The Oaks serves as an anchor to Historic
Downtown Hattiesburg along with the Hub City Historic District, the Historic Hattiesburg Historic
Neighborhood District and the North Main Street Historic District.
